Federal authorities have officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to halt the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in a US district court, targets the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on voting rights and mocks the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the major response by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will influence the final years of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, investigations and possible further challenges.
